Posted Tanys Coughlan Workplace Wednesdays

Welcome to our January Workplace Wellness Series.

This month we will be looking at the various aspects of workplace well from a holistic approach. We will be focusing first on what is workplace wellness and what are the benefits. Then weekly we will be focusing on a different part of workplace wellness: the body, the mind, the Spirit and how each of these affects the workplace and the employees so join us each Wednesday in January to get the full picture on Workplace Wellness.

What is wellness in the workplace and why should we encourage it? There are many studies that have shown the positive effects of wellness in the workplace. Some of these include:
For the Employer:

• Happier employees
• More Productive employees
• Less absenteeism
• Lower healthcare (benefits) costs
• Higher retention rates
• Higher rates of job satisfaction
• More effective teams from doing non-work related activities together

For the Employee

• Reduced stress levels
• Reduces muscle strain
• Support with reducing risk factors such as losing weight, quitting smoking, healthy eating
• Better sleep
• Lower cholesterol and blood pressure
• Save money on prescriptions
• Overall better sense of wellbeing
• Social support and camaraderie from doing non-work related activities together

“The bottom line of such programs is this: healthy employees tend to be happier and more productive employees. These programs range from simply offering information to workers, to subsidized healthy lunches, fitness education, and a company gym. Employees are the most valuable assets to any company. This is why workplace wellness programs should matter to you.” (http://www.sparkpeople.com/resource/wellness_articles.asp?id=246)
